Managing followers effectively in the Odoo Project app helps ensure the right stakeholders stay informed, without cluttering others' inboxes with unnecessary updates. By default, Odoo assigns followers to new tasks and subtasks based on a few key rules.
Understanding these rules helps maintain efficient communication and avoid accidental information leaks, such as unintentionally emailing customers due to automatic follower assignments.
Default Followers for New Tasks
When a new task is created in Odoo, the following users are automatically added as followers:
- Project followers – Anyone following the overall project will also follow new tasks within it.
- Assigned users – All users assigned to the task are added as followers.
- The task creator – The user who creates the task is also added by default.
Default Followers for Subtasks
When a subtask is created, Odoo applies the same rules as for tasks, plus:
- Followers of the parent task – These are also added as followers to the subtask.
Important Note on Customer Communication
In Odoo 18.0 and earlier versions, when a message is sent to a customer via the inline chatter (the message composer within a task), the customer is automatically added as a follower. However, starting with Odoo 18.2, this behaviour has changed: customers are no longer added as followers by default when messaged through the task’s chatter.
